Hello and welcome to our farm! We are glad you have taken time out of your busy schedule to visit with us!! Here is a little about the Wachters:
David is a third generation farmer. Our family farm is located northeast of Lincoln and we have traditionally grown soybeans and corn. We farm our own ground and also rent some acreage from family. David sells LG seed and Archer Oil and has also done some custom farming.
I have spent what seems like my entire life doing jobs that I couldn't stand for the most part and decided it was time to change professions. A couple of years ago, as a hobby, I put up a small greenhouse and was bit by the growing bug. I have always enjoyed my flower gardens but the produce became a whole new obsession, so last year I gave up the grind of driving the interstate to Springfield and am now trying to make my living in the dirt. We are starting out small but hope to increase the scale of the produce operation. Most of what we produce will be sold at the Lincoln Farmer's Market in Scully Park or at the farm; I will also be selling produce at the Thursday night market at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL. *update* We have now built the produce shed at the house and have put up 2 additional greenhouses. We are now selling eggs, produce, etc. out of the new shed on a daily basis.
I have been bugging David to let me have some livestock and I finally got him to agree to chickens. We now we have 5 laying hens, 13 "teen" pullets, and 40 more babies that are still little fuzzballs. All I can think of is how good those fresh eggs will be! I am so excited to be able to offer farm fresh eggs to our customers when they come to the farm to get their produce. We will also be trying our hand at raising meat birds but we will only be starting with 25. I almost feel like a chicken hoarder since all I wanted to begin with was 12!
We have both realized that there is a lot of great information available in the form of books, advice, seminars, and on the internet but there is still a lot of trial and error involved. We are grateful to our friends, family, and customers for their help and support. We have even got some extremely helpful and useful information from total strangers.
We also spend quite a bit of time in the kitchen. David installed a bigger and better oven in our kitchen last winter for the dog biscuits. I started out making my dogs homemade treats when the commercial treats we fed out dogs were recalled a few years ago. I then started giving them to our friends as little gifts and they loved them so much they wanted to buy more of them. We will also sell them at the Lincoln Farmer's Market and the Springfield market at the Fairgrounds. They are truly a labor of love and are rigorously "Lab" tested by Rose and her other canine companions.

Devan is in college in Edwardsville studying to become an engineer but comes home when he can to help with all the work. He is doing well in his classes and really likes SIUE. He was hoping to get an internship at a good engineering firm for the summer but they are looking for students in their second year of college and he only has one under his belt for now. I still am not for sure if he wants the internship to help his career or if he is just dreading having to pick endless amounts of green beans.......

Wachter Farms is a proud member of the Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Specialty Growers Association/Illinois Vegetable Growers Association, and Lincoln Logan Chamber of Commerce. We are also licensed with the Illinois Department of Agriculture as an egg producer/dealer.
Thank you for stopping by our site and sharing a bit of your day with us. We hope you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous growing season!
